What are CAT tools translations and what’s the difference with ordinary translations, made with a text editor? How does a translation memory actually work?
CAT software gradually stores translations in its memory as you work in the program, so it will automatically suggest the right words and phrases when a similar text needs to be translated. This ensures the consistency of the terminology, an extremely important element for achieving an optimal translation quality as a whole, especially when it comes to a large-scale project.
What are the advantages of a translation made with CAT tools?
In addition to an impeccable translation quality, mainly due to the uniformity of the terminology used from start to end of a given project, translations made with CAT tools can be delivered faster, given that the required time to perform a translation is consistently reduced by the help of technology and it logically minimizes the costs for the client (repetitive words are charged at a lower price than new words).
How are translations made with CAT tools quantified?
There are some key terms used in relation to translation memories. Among the most common terms, we can mention: perfect match, repetitions, partial match, no match. When a translator uses the translation memory for a new content, it can get the following results: "no match", which means there is no matching segment in the translation memory. This kind of sentence will have to be translated from the beginning by a human translator. Another result can be "perfect match" (i.e. 100% match), which obviously means that there is a sentence (or segment) in the new text that is identical to another segment already translated and saved in that memory. In this case, the translator must check that the segment is used correctly in the context of the new translation and simply approve it if so. Another result can be "partial match", when there is a sentence or segment in new content that is similar, but not identical, to a segment already saved in the translation memory. In all of the above cases, the human translator must either review or check the results for correctness or modify them, always aiming to translate the given phrase correctly.

Which CAT programs do we use?
ATTENTION, CAT programs should not be confused with automatic translation machines, such as Google translate translation engine. In this case, the computer does the translation, but a translator using CAT tools does the translation himself, relying on the translation memory, which is just a support tool.
